Novink new name for Quebecor World?
The printing industry website PrintCan.com (a sister site to MastheadOnline) reported yesterday that Novink — “nova” is Latin for “new” — may be the new name for Quebecor World, according to a filing with the Canadian trademark office.

If so, it suggests the proposed US $1.35 billion takeover by U.S. print giant RR Donnelley may not go through, and the company will emerge as a standalone entity, though details have not been confirmed. Folio magazine, in a column by Tony Silber, suggests the Donnelley deal may not be as attractive as many analysts think, with myriad problems including a potential six-month antitrust review with no guarantee of a successful outcome.

Quebecor World announced last year that it would be changing its name as it re-emerged from bankruptcy protection in both Canada and the United States. The company’s proposal to creditors will be presented at a meeting on June 18.

Montreal-based Quebecor World applied for a trademark for Novink last July, according to the Canadian Intellectual Property Office. As of May 20, 2009, the trademark’s status was “advertised,” which means a trademark application has been published in the official Trade-marks Journal to allow opportunity for challenges to the application.

The trademark covers the following:

Wares: printed materials, namely advertising inserts and circulars, flyers, posters, leaflets, catalogues, direct mail products namely, brochures, inserts, self-mailers, traditional envelope packages, postcards, collated wrap packages, closed faced envelope packages, snap pack mailers, dimensional mailers, promotional billing statements, informational inserts and circulars, flyers and leaflets, all featuring the goods and services of others; magazines, newspapers, books, directories.

Services: printing services; consulting services in the field of printing solutions; consulting services in the field of printed advertising and marketing materials distribution.

Through its agent Ogilvy Renault LLP, Quebecor World has been busy filing other trademark applications as well, including:
  • Redefiningprint: all one word; a possible slogan?
  • Integrated Multichannel Solutions: “…an umbrella of services and integrated solutions focusing on helping multichannel customers to improve their 'touch' to the consumer across multiple channels: print, web and store…”
  • Flexapeel: “Direct mail print products namely, brochures, inserts, self-mailers, traditional envelope packages, postcards, collated wrap packages, closed faced envelope packages, snap pack mailers, dimensional mailers, promotional billing statements, informational inserts and circulars, flyers and leaflets, all featuring the goods and services of others.”
  • Store.driver: “Direct mail pieces, namely, leaflets, flyers, brochures, self-mailers, postcards, or any type of printed media (preferably with an imaged name and address of the recipient) that is delivered by mail with the sole purpose of requesting an action by the recipient (provoking a response).”
  • Bounce Back: “Variable digitally printed package insert.”
Quebecor World has said it would announce the company’s new name before the June 18 creditor’s meeting.
