Robert Fife, Ottawa Bureau Chief for The Globe and Mail, is retiring at the end of May 2026 after a remarkable career that started in the Parliamentary Bureau of NewsRadio in 1978. Fife worked for The Canadian Press, Sun Media, National Post, and CanWest News Service, before joining CTV as Ottawa Bureau Chief in 2005 and hosting Question Period. He’s been with The Globe since 2015. Most recently, the 71-year-old Chapleau, Ontario native was honoured with a Canadian Journalism Foundation (CJF) Lifetime Achievement Award.
“His ongoing work helped set the national agenda through fearless, rigorous reporting and journalism that consistently exposed issues of profound national consequence, and strengthened the public’s understanding of Canada’s political institutions,” said the CFJ. Achievement Award jury member Hamlin Grange added: “Among other things, his reporting forced governments to be held accountable. His stories didn’t just inform the public, they changed laws.” Fife will be honoured at the CJF Awards ceremony on June 10, 2026, at the Royal York Hotel in Toronto.
