AMPA names achievement winners and showcase finalists
Uppercase founder Janine Vangool has been named Editor of the Year by the Alberta Magazine Awards, presented by the Alberta Magazine Publishers Association (AMPA).
Launched five years ago, Uppercase was Vangool's first foray into magazine editing. According to AMPA, the arts magazine's print run has increased tenfold since then.
"Why is Uppercase such a success story? Because of Vangool’s editorial acumen, entrepreneurial flair, and hard work," says the association on its website. "She has sold subscriptions, liased with stockists, shot photos, written stories, blogged, designed, managed, furnished and financed Uppercase."
Also winning achievement awards this year are Tom Tait of Galleries West, who takes the nod for Achievement in Publishing; Emily Ursuliak from Filling Station, Volunteer of the Year; and Glass Buffalo, which receives the prize for Best New Magazine.
The achievement award winners will be celebrated at the Alberta Magazine Awards on March 20, 2014 in Calgary. Winners for the Magazine of the Year category and 15 Showcase Awards will be revealed at the gala.
The shortlist nominees for Magazine of the Year are Avenue Edmonton, Eighteen Bridges and Uppercase. The full list of 2014 showcase awards finalists is available at AlbertaMagazines.com.
Multiple-nominees include Alberta Venture, Swerve, Avenue Calgary and Avenue Edmonton, Alberta Oil, Alberta Views and more.
