Nancy Bauer

Fredericton New Brunswick author Nancy Bauer has won this year’s Legacy Award at the 11th Annual New Brunswick Book Awards. Bauer, 91, has written five novels, 25 chapbooks, and dozens of articles for various magazines. She authored a weekly arts column in the St. John Telegraph-Journal and during that time, wrote over 500,000 words! Bauer also became a member of the famed Ice House Gang, a creative writing group that met regularly on the University of New Brunswick (UNB) campus. All award winners: https://wfnb.ca/NBBA

Bauer founded the Maritime Writers’ Workshop in 1974 and was a co-founder of the Writers’ Federation of New Brunswick. Her first novel was Flora, Write This Down in 1983. She was born in Chelmsford, Massachusetts in 1934 and went on to get a BA from Mount Holyoke College in 1956. She was also the oldest member at the Seven Sisters – an historic group of women’s colleges in the northeastern United States. Bauer immigrated to Fredericton in 1965 when her husband, Bill, was hired to teach at UNB.
