NMA and KRW awards to be presented on same evening this year
The National Magazine Awards gala is joining the company of the annual Kenneth R. Wilson (KRW) Awards on the same evening this year for the first time.
On June 7 at The Carlu, the two awards ceremonies will be presented separately, with a joint industry cocktail reception punctuating the two.
Here's how things will shake up that evening:
KRW said ticket options and prices will be posted on the websites of the NMAF and KRW Awards by May 1 and May 3, respectively, and will be available for sale on those dates.
The National Magazine Awards Foundation, Canadian Business Press (CBP) and Magazines Canada "believe it is advantageous to align the two events in order to benefit from increased networking between these two sectors of the Canadian magazine industry, as well as to maximize organizational synergies for a successful event that celebrates excellence in the content and creation of Canadian magazines," according to a release from KRW.
The NMAF decided to move its event from a Friday, when it traditionally takes place, to Thursday through "consultation with industry stakeholders and partners (which) decided to move the event to a Thursday evening in order to gain the advantage of extra media attention to the award winners afforded by having a weekday rather than a weekend follow the gala, as well as to better accommodate travel and other schedules of participants in Magazines Week in Toronto."
Barbara Gould, managing director of both the NMAF and the KRW Awards, noted, "The awards on June 7 will honour those who have had a profound impact on the quality of magazine publishing in Canada, and a rare opportunity to have this collective talent together for one evening."
An in earlier story by Masthead about the aligning of the two events, a spokesperson said the two awards remain independent.
The KRW Awards celebrate excellence in Canadian business-to-business magazine publishing, are co-produced by CBP and Magazines Canada, and presented by CDS Global.

Consumer magazines are bigger, they have more influence on the public and they have a lot more money than we (as one commentor facetiously put it) lowly B2B publishers.
But that doesn't diminish the fact that there are many top writers and editors working in our industry. Their best work is every bit the equal of what their peers in the consumer press produce.
Basically they're all writers, journalists and editors. Our work has been highly celebrated for over 50 years. Over those years these awards have challenged thousands of B2B writers to create better content...the kind of content that makes the role we play more valuable to our audiences.
Rather than motivating our writers, playing second fiddle to the "big guys" denigrates what they do and the industry in which they work.
This format must be challenged and I will do whatever I can to see that it is. Are any of you willing to join me in trying to get things changed for next year and beyond?
Anon #2's reference of a "lowly trade magazine" was intended to be humorous, similar to other remarks made in the same posting.
The mission of a B2B publication isn't quite the same as a consumer pub. A business publication is written and designed to educate professionals in a given field (i.e. law, engineering, medicine, etc.) and to help them make better decisions which ultimately allows them to run their businesses more efficiently, and more profitably. To achieve this mandate, a B2B publisher doesn't necessarily need to print on heavy gloss paper, or include stunning photography, etc.
Consumer pubs serve consumers, a business publication serves professionals within a given industry or job function. Both types of publications are useful (some specific publications aren't very useful, though) - but if we're celebrating the excellent work of both publishing segments - why should one take the back seat over the other?
Geez, quite a change from the grand production that the CBP used to put on at The Old Mill some years ago. Does the CBP not have a voice anymore? Why would they settle for this?
Once per year, we get to celebrate the tremendous work of business/trade publishers - and this is how we do it? With a rushed 4:30 - 6:00 in and out? This is an embarrassment.
