Design Edge Canada launches iPad edition
Masthead's sister title Design Edge Canada has launched iPad and iPhone editions of its bimonthly print publication, starting with the current May/June 2011 issue.
May/June's cover story is on "Design & the move to mobile." Extras for the iPad in this issue include mini video tours with environmental design studio Entro Communications of the new wayfinding system for Toronto's Union Station, and a video intro to creating mobile publication content with Adobe InDesign narrated by Tool Tips columnist Bob Atkinson.
The tablet edition was produced through Canadian magazine distributor Disticor, which has partnered with U.K.-based company MagazineCloner to offer digital publishing solutions for iPad and iPhone.
Each issue of the Design Edge iPad edition will contain rich media content not available in the print edition. Portrait view shows single pages; landscape view shows double-page spreads. Readers can pinch and zoom to see larger type and images. Tapping the screen once at the bottom pulls up a thumbnail table of contents for quick scanning.
The tablet edition is available for download now through the Apple App store. Use the search tool and plug in the Design Edge Canada name. The fee for the app is 99 cents; the first issue is free. Thereafter each issue will cost $2.99.
The print magazine increased its national ABC-audited circulation from 7,500 to 8,000 earlier this year due to demand. It is distributed on a free request basis to qualified graphic designers at design studios, ad agencies, corporate in-house design departments, publishers, and printing and packaging companies.
"We're betting that iPad-equipped designers will spend the equivalent of one latte to get the extra rich media content in the tablet edition," says publisher Doug Bennet. "We'll know in a few months whether that's true or not."
Shameless plug: Design Edge has been named Trade Magazine of the Year three years in a row by the Canadian Society of Magazine Editors. The Design Edge web site has also been nominated for Web Site of the Year in this year's KRW Awards.
