The Canadian Online Publishing Awards celebrated its 10th Aniversary on November 14 at the historic Eglinton Grand in Toronto. The winners this year came from across the country with Western Canada getting 11 Golds, 11 Silvers; Ontario had 20 Gold and 21 Silver; Quebec 11G, 9 Silver; and the Maritimes 2G and 1 Silver.
The big winner this year was RDS.ca the French language sports website part of the Bell Media family that won 6 Gold and 2 Silver plus a Gold for Best publication in Best of Canada category. The other winners for Best of Canada were the Huffington Post Quebec for digital content, The Kit for Best Digital Solution and Hakai Magazine for Independent publisher of the year.
Some of the big winners from Western Canada were two independence magazines the Narwhal that won a Gold and 3 Silver and Hakai Magazine that won 3 Gold and 1 Silver. The UBC School of Journalism won three golds and one silver.
As part of the 10th anniversary festivities were video tributes from across Canada from CTV Calgary, ITWC/YMC based in Toronto and Bell Media Quebec from Montreal that can be viewed on the new YouTube channel for the COPA Awards. 2018 Video winners and past winners will be posted on the YouTube channel. The COPA twitter hashtag (COPAwards) is the place where the community celebrated together for this national awards program.
Martin Seto, the producer of the COPAs states the COPAs have become the guiding light for the industry as a place where content is authoritative, authentic and honest. As part of the COPAs goal to be a national and inclusive program an Ethnic Media Division will be created to better reflect on what Canada’s diversity is all about in 2019.Click Here for a complete list winners and finalists are available on the COPA website.
