NYT retires “Op-Ed”

After coining the phrase and using it for half a century, The New York Times is retiring the term Op-Ed, another victim of the digitization of the paper. The first Op-Ed page, named because it ran opposite the editorial page, appeared in 1970. It was meant to showcase ideas and arguments from any points on the political, social and cultural spectrums, and to discuss public problems.

But in an age when an increasing number of readers absorb NYT digitally, there is no geographic Op-Ed. According to Kathleen Kingsbury, opinion editor at the paper, the term is “a relic of an older age and an older print newspaper design."

In future, articles written by writers outside the paper’s ranks will simply be called Guest Essays.
