Melfort/Nipawin Journal ceases publishing

The Melfort/Nipawin Journal, publishing since the 2019 merger of the Melfort Journal, Nipawin Journal, and Northeast Sun in Saskatchewan, ended printing in June of 2026 said parent company Postmedia. The Journal will transition from a free printed publication to a fully digital format. The printing press in its Melfort office was closed in 2018. Since then, the printed publication was switched to a free format, with content focusing mostly on provincial news from reporters based in Saskatoon and other larger centres.

The Journal has a long, proud history. Dr. Alfred Shadd purchased the Prince Albert Advocate newspaper in 1908 and moved it to Melfort, renaming it the Carrot River Journal. He sold the newspaper in 1912, and the publication was renamed the Melfort Journal in 1915. “This change will enable us to continue serving our communities through strong, sustainable operations that reflect how readers increasingly access news today,” Postmedia added.
