It’s officially Canadian Magazine Week
Toronto Mayor, John Tory has proclaimed Oct.11-17, Canadian Magazine Week. With FIPP festivities starting on Tuesday, Toronto will be buzzing with all things print. Read the proclamation in full below.
WHEREAS Canada's thriving print and digital magazine media industry takes center stage in a global market.
Authored, published, printed and sold in Canada, Canadian magazines are comprised of 400,000 unique pages of Canadian content that are published annually. Canadians love their Canadian magazines because they connect millions of readers from coast to coast with what matters most to them. Over half of all Canadians read at least one magazine per week.
Canada's magazine media employs 18,000 people across Canada with the majority of the industry based in Ontario and 78 per cent in Toronto, making our city the overwhelming center of magazine publishing in Canada.
During Canadian Magazine Week, Toronto will host the 40th annual FIPP World Congress, the largest and most prestigious magazine event in the world. Being held in Canada for the first time, this global event will draw over 800 participants to Toronto, which will include international and Canadian business, cultural and consumer magazine media publishers who drive the content of global media brands.
Aside from raising the international profile of an important Canadian cultural industry, this spotlight on Canada's magazine media also allows the citizens of Toronto to discover and embrace the $2 billion Canadian-content magazine industry. With its strong diversity and magazine media industry, Toronto is the perfect fit for the world's biggest magazine media event.
NOW THEREFORE, I, Mayor John Tory, on behalf of Toronto City Council, do hereby proclaim October 11 – 17, 2015 as "Canadian Magazine Week" in the City of Toronto.
