HuffPost Canada staff files to unionize

Staff at HuffPost Canada has filed for union certification. CWA Canada filed with the Canada Industrial Relations Board last week, with support from the majority of staff.

CWA Canada represents 6,000 workers at the CBC, The Canadian Press, APTN, and newspapers and other companies across the country.

The staff has formed a union organizing committee which will address these main issues:

Fair compensation, including salary minimums, pay scales that reflect equal pay for work of equal value, clear paths to promotions and raises, retirement savings plans, and better benefits;

Fair notice for layoffs, and severance packages;

Fair treatment of contractors, including job security, permanent employment after an established time, fair pay, and benefits;

Fair diversity policies that formalize hiring diverse staff and improve newsroom diversity.
