A diverse range of titles—from Calgary-based Fly Fusion to the Maclean's 2010 Olympic SIP—took top honours at the 10th annual Canadian Newsstand Awards/Grand prix d’excellence en kiosque in Toronto Monday evening.

Two Gold Awards went to Montreal’s TVA Publications, for women’s service title Moi & Cie and celebrity weekly 7 Jours, with a photo of Celine Dion and her twin boys.

Accepting the prize, TVA president Jocelyn Poirier told the story of receiving an unusual call from Dion’s husband and manager, René Angelil, saying he had some great family photos the publisher might be interested in. That issue of 7 Jours went on to sell more than 162,000 copies.

The Newsstand Awards are produced by Masthead with partners LS Travel Retail, Audit Bureau of Circulations and CMC Circulation Management Association of Canada. Gold winners receive a total of $24,000 in newsstand promotion credits with LS Travel (formerly HDS Retail).

ABC sponsors the Newsstand Marketer of the Year award, this year won by Mary Cosgrove of The News Group, largely for her work with Shopper’s Drug Mart.

The awards evening followed CMC seminars on global trends in single-copy sales and tips for point-of-purchase promotions.
