Yellowknifer Weekend ends Friday editions

The final printed Friday edition of the Yellowknifer Weekend, published on July 24, 2026, signalled that the 54-year-old publication will reduce its print schedule from two weekly issues to one, and will now publish only on Wednesdays. Weekend coverage will shift entirely to digital platforms, primarily distributed through Northern News Services Limited’s (NNSL’s) daily online newsletter, Morning Alert.
Shane Weaver, GM of NNSL, added that while the Friday paper has served the community since March of 1986, reader habits have evolved. The move reflects an ongoing pattern across Canada as local newsrooms are either closing or downsizing. Bruce Valpy, former publisher at NNSL who worked for the news outlet for 32 years, said the decision to reduce physical printing reflects long-standing economic pressures on traditional Canadian print media.
