How is it that Newspapers and Books are exempt but magazines are not? What's that all about. Are we not printed on paper. Are we not educating children? Are we not part of the cultural community? What do we need to do to be treated equally and fairly?

Scott B, magazines are subsidized by the Federal Government, plus there is a federal fund for publishing magazines with a circulation of more than 5000. However I think newspapers should be taxed but not Books. They don't place advs. in them.

Note that book publishing industry also gets lots of federal and provincial funding from Dept of Cdn Heritage, Canada Council and provincial arts councils... nothing against books, it's a tough industry and government funding has been very successful in creating a vibrant Canadian literary scene with many global successes.

But the Fed didn't create the HST the Province did. The Province decided to give our printed friends in the Book and Newspaper businesses an exemption, but not magazines. I take your point about advertising, but this is a consumption tax on reading material, and we got stiffed. I'd just like to know how Newspapers got the break? And why?
