Two PEI Newspapers Negotiate Their First Union Contract

After three years of organizing, the first union agreement in over 100 years with newsroom staff at The Guardian (Charlottetown) and Journal Pioneer (Summerside), has been reached. Newsroom staff at both newspapers started meeting in February of 2023. Pushback from SaltWire, the former owner of the publications, followed by SaltWire entering creditor protection and ultimately a buyout by Postmedia, was the primary cause of several delays.
The contract reached the bargaining stage last November, with the final agreement coming into effect January 18, 2026. It affects about a dozen staffers across Prince Edward Island. One major issue was wage parity. People doing the same work in other Atlantic Canada jurisdictions have traditionally been paid more than workers in PEI. Both newspapers continue to have a strong, loyal subscriber base.
