Reuters Institute Releases 2026 News Trends and Predictions Report

The Reuters Institute for the study of journalism at Oxford University, has released its 2026 Trends and Predictions report highlighting an extremely challenging year for news organizations worldwide – driven by a 43% expected drop in search traffic due to AI ‘answer engines’, and the rise of personality-led, creator-driven content (i.e. influencers). Publishers are responding by integrating AI into workflows, pushing journalists to become platform influencers, and focusing on unique, trusted content to survive.
Major topics in the report for 2026 dealt with the AI and the ‘creator squeeze,’ declining search traffic, the rise of ‘creator’ journalists, ‘videofication’ of news, and objective, superior-quality investigative journalism designed to retain audience trust. The report was based on a survey of 280 senior newsroom executives from 51 countries.
