The downtown shop stocks most of Magazines Canada's titles and is the flagship location of the Read's/United chain of stores, which also operates in Moncton, Riverview, St. John and Halifax. Jeff Magnusson is manager, and co-owns the chain with John Devona and Mark Smith.
Magazines Canada also announced the winners of the 2012 Volunteer of the Year Awards from four regional magazine associations.
Alexa Thompson is Volunteer of the Year for the Atlantic Magazines Association. She is a magazine writer and editor, as well as children's book editor and writer of non-fiction books. She edited CelticLife magazine for 19 years through several incarnations.
Magazines Ontario awarded Alastair Cheng. He is co-publisher of the Literary Review of Canada where he started as editorial assistant. He is also chair of Magazines Canada's Cultural Magazines committee and serves on the Ontario Media Development Corporation Magazine Industry advisory committee.
Brenda Johnstone, publisher of Convenience & Carwash Canada, got the nod from the Manitoba Magazine Publishers' Association. Johnstone is president of Johnstone Media and secretary of the MMPA. She also serves on the MMPA membership committee and has worked on the association's Awards and Conference planning committees.
And for the Magazine Association of BC, the award goes to Diane Wong, who volunteers for the association and manages its social media hubs. She also handled communications for the group's membership and direct mail campaigns, and helped edit the BC Magazines for Schools resource guide.
The Alberta Magazine Publishers Association and Magazines du Quebec did not announce a volunteer of the year for 2012. Last week, Darlene Storey was named as Magazines Canada's 2012 Volunteer of the Year.
