Landmark Press Freedom Trial Begins In B.C.
Amber Bracken
Amber Bracken
Based in Edmonton, Amber Bracken is an Alberta-born photojournalist. It’s been over four years since she was arrested by the RCMP while on assignment for The Narwhal in northern B.C. The Narwhal is Canadian non-profit online investigative journalism magazine supported by over 7,000 members. Bracken and The Narwhal sued the RCMP for breaching their constitutionally protected rights as journalists. January 2026 marks the beginning of an estimated five-week trial in British Columbia’s Supreme Court.
On November 19, 2021, Bracken was onsite documenting tensions over the construction of the Coastal GasLink pipeline through unceded Wet’suwet’en territory. The RCMP arrested her allegedly for “aiding or abetting” protesters there. In reality, she never participated in any protest activities. After her arrest, the Canadian Association of Journalists (CAJ) called for her immediate release from jail. The CAJ also sent letters to several government leaders, and the commissioner of the RCMP. More updates will follow.
