Journalism internship program re-started

Torstar and Metroland Media Group have announced that print editions for four local newspapers in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) are making a comeback. The Burlington Post and Oakville Beaver are returning to print after more than two years, re-launching as free monthly newspapers, while Oshawa This Week and Whitby This Week, both DurhamRegion.com publications, will re-appear in monthly printed formats. The revival has been welcomed by readers who insist that print editions are a more engaging way to stay connected to local issues.
Metroland is also re-launching its journalism internship program with 20 new editorial intern positions available this summer, along with some year-long positions available across Ontario. In 2023, Metroland moved its local newspapers to digital-only – except for six major daily newspapers – after it sought protection and restructured under the Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act. Metroland also received more than $3.2 million in Google payments last year in exchange for Google getting an exemption from the Online News Act.
