COVID claims more than 3,000 media jobs

The recent closure of HuffPost Canada and HuffPost Quebec came as a shock to many people, but it’s just one of the shakeups in Canada’s media.

According to a recently released report from J-Source, more than 3,000 editorial and non-editorial media jobs have been temporarily or permanently cut since the start of the pandemic.

J-Source, has been tracking the layoffs, wage cuts, service reductions and closures since March 2020. Here are the some of the grim figures in the COVID-19 Media Impact Map for Canada:

67 media outlets have closed temporarily or permanently

49 outlets have suspended or cancelled some of all print editions

182 media outlets have reported layoffs or job losses

3,011 editorial and non-editorial jobs have been temporarily cut or eliminated; 1,269 of them permanently

And the worst may be yet to come, according to the report, as government programs that have helped media companies cope with the pandemic come to an end for both the media and potential business advertisers.
