CAJ shares harassment concern with PM

The Canadian Association of Journalists recently wrote to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to express concern about the “increasing and alarming online hate and harassment targeting journalists and journalism.”

According to the letter, most of these attacks are aimed at racialized and female journalists. In a 2021 survey of journalists, 72% said they had experienced some form of online harassment.

The association has asked for several steps to address the issue, including treating the threats as a cooperative approach across police forces, improving the process for reporting harassment, better transparency of the process.

The letter was signed by many media outlets and publishers and shared with several ministers, along with members of the New Democratic Party of Canada and the Conservative Party of Canada.

The full letter and a copy of the prime minister’s response is available here.
