There are some interesting magazine events coming up of the next couple of weeks: a weeklong celebration of books and magazine, a panel discussion on how to sell without selling out and a seminar on how to increase profits from web and print.
BC Book and Magazine Week kicks off in Vancouver tomorrow and runs until April 25. The annual event is organized by the Association of Book Publishers of BC (ABPBC) and the BC Association of Magazine Publishers (BCAMP) ims to increase awareness and appreciation of the local publishing culture.
Events will be happening throughout the region in Chilliwack, Victoria, Kelowna, Prince George and Vancouver and many are free of charge.
- A book and magazine fair, showcasing the diverse range of books and magazine published in BC.
- Book launches and readings from some of BC most respected authors.
- Seminars and workshops by industry professionals, including consultations by editors from the Editors’ Association of Canada. Make sure to bring your pitches and writing samples with you.
- Magazine cabarets, where writers from such publications as The Malahat Review, subTerrain and off-center magazine, read from their recently published work.
- A main street literary tour through downtown Vancouver’s galleries, cafés, boutiques and other literary hotspots.
- The Lieutenant Governor’s BC Book Prize Gala is held on the final evening of the event, in honour of BC authors and illustrators.

The Canadian Society of Magazine Editors (CSME) is holding a luncheon on April 23 to discuss ad-edit boundaries. Entitled, “How to sell without selling out”, panelists will illustrate how to generate new revenue for their brands without compromising the reader experience.

To close the month, on April 30, Transcontinental and the Alberta Magazine Publishers Association are hosting a seminar called “Web & Print: Profit from Two Platforms” that is designed to offer insights into how you can unite your print publication and your website to maximize revenue. The seminar is geared towards publishers (small, medium, independent, specialty, B2B and B2C), marketing executives, and advertising directors.
The keynote speaker is Martin White, founder of Online Magazine Marketing, who specializes in advising magazine publishers on best practices integrating print and Web. He has managed publications such as Time Canada, Toronto Life and Vantage magazine and has done consultation work for Rogers Media, Harco Publishing and Kontent Media.
The seminar is being held at the Calgary Italian Club. It starts at 3 p.m. and will be followed by cocktails and a publishers bocce ball tournament.
