Turtle Island News veteran journalist and sportswriter Sam Laskaris has been chosen as the 2025 Debwewin Citation winner. The award, presented by the Anishinabek Nation for Excellence in Journalism, recognizes excellence in reporting about Anishinabek issues. Anishinabek Nation is a political advocate for 39 First Nations communities across Ontario. The award was presented August 28, 2025, at Casino Rama Resort in Chippewas of Rama First Nation during the Anishinabek Evening of Excellence ceremony.  Turtle Island News is Canada’s only national native weekly newspaper. It’s also a politically independent media and publishing company owned and operated by Aboriginals. Both the newspaper and online edition have a readership over 100,000. The company also publishes Aboriginal BusinessAboriginal Tourism, and Aboriginal Golf.
