Online subscriptions surpass print at New York Times

The New York Times is reporting it added 393,000 paid digital-only subscribers during the third quarter of 2020 and said revenues from online-only subs surpassed its print revenue for the first time ever.

The newspaper also reported that revenues from subscriptions grew 12.6% to $301 million, even as ad revenues dropped by 30% to $79 million in the quarter.

A similar pattern is expected for the fourth quarter, as digital subs will rise by 35% while ad sales slip by 30%.

The Times now claims 6.5 million total subscribers, including 5.7 million digital-only ones, and is well on its way to achieving its goals of 10 million subscribers by 2025.
