Mohawk College drops first year journalism program

Mohawk College in Hamilton, Ont., is dropping first-year journalism admissions this fall, reports the Hamilton Spectator. The colleges’ chief operating officer, Paul Armstrong, said declining enrolment and bleak job prospects are responsible for the decision. “The (journalism) industry is changing dramatically and the demand for graduates out there is not there,” he told the Spectator.

Second- and third-year students will be able to complete the program. A decision to re-admit first year students or alter the program is slated for the next few months.

About new 16 students were expected this September compared to 20 last year, 15 in 2021 and 28 in 2020.
