The nominees are in for the 38th annual NMAs
The National Magazine Award Foundation (NMAF) has announced the finalists for its annual awards. Over 200 Canadian print and digital magazines submitted work this year, in both official languages. The NMAF says they have seen an increase in participation from Quebec and Alberta magazines, and from literary and arts magazines through the recently announced NMAF Small Magazine Rebate program.

The NMAF’s 241 volunteer judges nominated 326 submissions from 80 different Canadian magazines for awards in 43 written, visual, integrated and special categories.

Leading the pack with 30 nominations is The Walrus. The publication has become one of Canada’s most decorated, having received 71 gold and 48 silver NMA awards as well as 223 honourable mentions.

“We’re thrilled with this recognition of our contributors and staff, and we congratulate all,” Shelley Ambrose, publisher of The Walrus and executive director of the Walrus Foundation said. “We’d like to thank everyone who makes it possible for us to provide a forum for such a high standard of journalism from this country’s most talented writers, editors, and artists.”

The Walrus is followed by Report on Business (28 nominations), L’actualite (21), Maclean’s (19), Toronto Life (17), Sportsnet (15) and Maisonneuve (14).

The Magazine of the Year finalists, given to the magazine that best engages, surprises and serves the needs of its readers, are: Nouveau Projet, The Walrus and Uppercase.
