SkyNews shines bright with Cover Awards wins
SkyNews publisher Greg Keilty took home the Newsstand Marketer of the Year prize at the Canadian Cover Awards. The award is for "an individual who demonstrates true innovation and passion within a successful newsstand marketing project."
The astronomy mag also took home top honours in the Sports and Leisure category, for its May/June 2012 cover. The issue sold 4,800 copies for a 97% increase over the last corresponding edition, and was noteworthy for including a pair of solar eclipse glasses for safe viewing of the the transit of Venus in June. Newsstand sales have risen 43% over the year.
Elle Québec 's August 2012 cover won in Fashion, Shopping and Bridal. The issue featured exclusive coverage of the wedding of Quebec celebs Véronique Cloutier and Louis Morissette. The cover was shot in 20 minutes, three days before the mag was scheduled to hit newsstands, and the issue sold over 108,000 copies with 78% efficiency.
In the General Interest, Arts, Lifestyle and Regional category, Legion Magazine's Jan/Feb 2012 cover came out on top. It moved 1,200 copies, almost 200% more than the Jan/Feb issue the previous year.
Style at Home won in Home and Decor for its September 2011 issue, which came with a polybagged booklet. Canadian Business' February 20, 2012 issue, which sold with 39.2% efficiency, won the award in News, Business and Celebrity.
The Women's Service prize went to Chatelaine for the February 2012 edition, which sold with 47.4% efficiency, and the award in SIPs and New Magazines went to Maclean's for its Royal Wedding special.
Held last night at the Courtyard Toronto Downtown, the Canadian Cover Awards were produced by the Circulation Management Association of Canada and Magazines Canada. The new initiative grew out of the previous Canadian Newsstand Awards produced by Masthead, CMC and HDS Retail (now LS Travel), launched in 2002.
