What no one here has mentioned is what a talented editor Dan is. I've worked with him both at Unlimited and Canadian Geographic. Of the many editors I've worked with over the years he's right there near the top.

Gus: I agree with you that anyone in the magazine industry understands the "less is more" mantra. But the last few issues of CG that I picked up had cover stories that were "in partnership" with the organizations that the magazine was writing about. That's a pretty big "challenge" for an editor.

Holy smokes Gus! Cool down. You will get a piece of coal from Santa with that judgemental attitude. You can't judge the person without dealing with whatever he's been dealing with, and we don't know what that might have been, if anything. I don't know Rubinstein, but I do know he doesn't owe us an explanation for his decision to leave. I know the industry, and yes, it's tough. Maybe he's just had enough. You've already assumed his job was "a dream job" (your words), and he's moving to "some vague foundation gig" (again, your words), and you've based your comments on no input. Amazing!! Step back and calm down. It isn't good for your heart to get this worked up!

Anonymous, you seem to have inside information about Rubinstein's resignation. At least you hint at having information when you talk about how CG is dealing with its "challenges." Well, yeah, fine, but so what? All of us in the print industry have new and unique challenges ... yourself included, I'd expect. I'm not knocking Rubinstein for resigning, that's his decision to make. But I don't believe his "challenges" are any more odious or unique than the ones we all now face (i.e doing more with considerably less).

It's never a "dream job" if you don't like your place of work.

Gus: anyone who has been reading CG even remotely closely for the last year or two can see that editing the magazine must have been far from a dream job. The magazine is dealing with the challenges the industry is facing in an interesting and unusual way (and that's being polite). I don't fault him for jumping ship.

CG seems short Editor's. Will the President/Publisher/Executive Director/Supreme Leader, add the Editor title too???

Whatever happened to the concept of a "dream" job we all used to talk about way back in the long-ago times? I don't think I've heard the term in quite a while. But it seems to me that Rubinstein had one ... a dream job that is. Now he's left the post for some vague foundation gig. Is that what it's all about now? Drifting from one job to the next like Dust Bowl pickers?
