Canadian Heritage under fire for funds to Common Ground

The Department of Canadian Heritage has come under fire after it came to light that it gave more than $17,000 to Common Ground, a B.C.-based magazine accused of publishing COVID misinformation, through the Canada Periodical Fund.

The title claimed that vaccines could cause cancer in children, and that a drug used to help livestock get rid of parasites can reduce mortality from the virus. Both claims are refuted by Health Canada.

Heritage Minister Pablo Rodriguez has said that his department is assessing its next steps for dealing with the matter. The department is tasked with overseeing the federal government’s response to false information online.

The story was first reported by the CBC.
