Magazines Canada responds to B.C. publishing cuts
Magazines Canada CEO Mark Jamison has written to B.C. premier Gordon Campbell in response to the $20,000 of cuts that the B.C. Association of Magazine Publishers received last week from the Arts and Culture branch of the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and the Arts. “It concerns us when we see these kinds of cuts,” says Jamison. “Obviously it is not something that pleases us.”
Governments need to recognize the balance between the cultural value of magazines and the economic contribution the make, says Jamison. “It is still a challenge in many respects with all levels of government that they don’t understand the positive impact on the GDP, jobs that are created and so on,” he says. “It is not in the DNA of the government the way that it should be.”
A press release from the B.C. Association of Magazine Publishers details the cuts which remove all money for operating funds and some salaries from the organization.
