[Update] Industry mourns death of Quill & Quire editor Derek Weiler
[This story has been updated to include details on visitation and the funeral.]

Derek Weiler, editor of Quill & Quire, a trade magazine covering the Canadian book industry, died yesterday at his home in Toronto. He was 40. According to a posting on a Facebook tribute page set up by Sari Morrison, Weiler's widow, "[a]lthough the family would prefer to keep the details private, Derek was born with a congenital heart defect that led to various health problems that resulted in his passing."

Weiler became Quill & Quire's editor-in-chief in April 2004, after holding every editorial position available—staff writer, review editor and news editor—since joining the magazine in 1999. Sharon McAuley, vice president and group publisher at St. Joseph Media and a former publisher of Quill & Quire, described him as the "heart and soul" of the magazine.

[Update] Via the Quill & Quire website: "Visitations will be held on Friday, April 17, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., and on Saturday, April 18, from 10 a.m. to 10:45 a.m., at the Henry Walser Funeral Home in Kitchener, Ontario. The funeral will follow on Saturday at 11 a.m."
