Western Magazine Awards announces finalists

The Western Magazine Awards released the list of nominees for its 31st annual show. It also announced writers Paul and Audrey Grescoe as tandem recipients of the Lifetime Achievement Award.

This is the first time the award has gone to a duo, which the judges said in a statement was not only in recognition of the Grescoes' contributions to the industry, but also "in celebration of lifelong partnerships."

Best New Magazine will go to one of three publications: Coast Mountain Culture Magazine, Homes & Living Magazine Vancouver, or Interlake Arts, Life & Leisure Magazine.

Up for Trade Magazine of the Year are Alberta Oil, British Columbia Medical Journal, CGA Magazine, Reel West Magazine, and West Coast Veterinarian.

BCliving, Boulderpavement, Swerve, Toque & Canoe, and VitaminDaily are in the running for Best Online Magazine.

As for the Magazine of the Year awards, here are the nominees by province/territory: In Alberta/NWT, the finalists are Alberta Venture, Eighteen Bridges, Up Here, Up Here Business, and Uppercase.

In the BC/Yukon field, the nominees are BCBusiness, Geist, Kootenay Mountain Culture Magazine, Western Living, and Vancouver Magazine, which leads this year with 18 nominations in total.

In Manitoba, the finalists are Border Crossings, Canada's History, Canadian Journal of Green Building & Design, Prairie Fire, and The Cottager.

And for Saskatchewan, either BlackFlash, Grain Magazine, Saskatoon Home Magazine, or Westworld Saskatchewan will find itself at the top.

The winners of each of the provincial Magazine of the Year categories will form the list of finalists for Magazine of the Year for all of Western Canada. While only print magazines are eligible for Magazine of the Year, the rules were changed this year for all Written Award categories, which were opened up to both print and online. The awards will be presented Friday, June 21 at the Renaissance Vancouver Hotel Harbourside. Tickets go on sale May 6. Hosting this year is CBC Radio's Jo-Ann Roberts. For more information and the full list of nominees, visit the WMA website.
