Photo Life cruises to connect with readers

Response to Photo Life’s Arctic Cruise Workshop has been so strong the magazine has announced it will host a second event this year.

Editorial director Valérie Racine says the workshops were created to increase the magazine's visibility and offer readers and photographers an “amazing and unique” experience. “It seems the level of interest is very high since the first workshop is sold out,” she says.

The 2010 cruises are scheduled for July and September when those aboard will photograph the Canadian Arctic while learning from leading photographers. Publisher Guy J. Poirier says they are planning to host three or possibly four cruises in 2011.

Each workshop takes about 12 people and costs roughly $5,000 to $7,000 to attend. Poirier says the cruises, which are done in partnership with Inuit-owned Cruise North Expeditions, are also a revenue generator for the magazine.

In addition, Photo Life has announced its call for entries in the Emerging Photographers competition where novice photographers may submit their work by May 15. Editors then select images for publication in the magazine’s August/September issue.

Held since 2007, the competition has gives beginners an opportunity to establish themselves in the industry and creates “solid bonds between the new generation of photographers, which are an important part of the target readership of the  magazine,” Racine says.

Photo Life is published by Apex Publications. It has a circulation of 40,000 and a $5.95 cover price.
