Harrowsmith’s Almanac goes digital

Readers who have enjoyed Harrowsmith’s Almanac in print, will now be able to enjoy the publication on their tablets and smartphones.

Publisher Yolanda Thornton of Moongate Publishing said the choice to go digital was made in order to broaden the scope of the publications audience. “Historically in the past with Harrowsmith Country Life Magazine (sister publication, no longer published) the audience was pretty much 35-64 year olds or 35+,” Thornton said. “There’s a huge portion of the younger demographic that are interested in these types of editorials and want to read about organics, DIY, home renovation, energy efficiency and growing your own fruits and vegetables. We wanted to be able to attract and capture a younger demographic.”

Harrowsmith’s Almanac is published annually along with Harrowsmith’s Gardening Digest, which is available in print and digital in March. It will also launch two new digital issues in Spring 2015: Harrowsmith’s My Kind of Town and Harrowsmith’s Homes.

In addition to its foray into the digital world, Harrowsmith's Almanac has welcomed Maurice Crossfield to the publication as its new editor-in-chief. Crossfield is a former community newspaper reporter, writer, translator, mechanic and metal worker. He was also a contributor to Harrowsmith’s Country Life Magazine. “Putting together Harrowsmith’s Almanac has been a lot of fun,” Crossfield said. “I also see it as a way to build community, exchanging ideas and giving folks food for thought as they consider the year ahead. All from a uniquely Canadian perspective.”

Canada’s gardening Guru Mark Cullen has also joined the Almanac as its gardening editor.

The October 2015 issue will feature articles on weather predictions and astronomical highlights, the future of solar energy, and how to raise your own chickens. Harrowsmith’s Almanac is available online and has a circulation of 70,000.
