Publishers, printers get green thumbs-up at Canopy awards
Canopy, a not-for-profit environmental advocacy group, handed out its 2012 Ancient Forest Friendly Awards last night in Toronto at the Centre for Social Innovation. The awards celebrated green conservation efforts in pulp and paper purchasing.

Ancient Forest Frienldy Gold awards were handed to Alternatives Journal, NOW Magazine, Quill & Quire, Watershed Sentinel and Ecojot. The Globe and Mail won Conservation Supporter and TC Media was recognized as Most Improved.

Nine companies were awarded 2012 Best In Class: St. Joseph Media and Garden Making (consumer magazines), TC Transcontinental (printers over 250,000 tonnes), EarthColor (printers over 25,000 tonnes), Hemlock Printers (printers over 2,500 tonnes), Ecoprint (printers under 2,500 tonnes), Sprint (telecommunications), Scholastic Canada (educational publishers), House of Anansi Press (book publishers), and Saul Good Gift (small business).

"When someone stops a tree from falling in the woods, we should all hear about it," said Canopy's campaign director Amanda Carr in her opening address. This was the organization's second event for the awards program launched last year.
