Deadline approaching to file B.C. printed paper management plan
Publishers who sell and/or distribute magazines in (or into) B.C. take note: You have until Nov. 19 to file a mandatory paper recycling plan under provincial regulations.
The Recycling Regulation of B.C.’s Environmental Management Act requires producers of printed paper products (PPP) that end up in the residential waste stream to be part of an approved end-of-life management plan to take effect May 2014.
As explained in a member bulletin
from Magazines Canada, publishers have the option to appoint Multi-Material British Columbia (MMBC) as their agent, which will administer a plan on their behalf (the deadline for registering a letter of intent is Nov. 5
and a sample letter can be found under quick links on this page
); companies can also register their own plan with a deadline of Nov. 19.
Under the regulation, producers required to file a plan are defined as "brand owners and first sellers of paper that is printed with text or graphics and consumer products supplied in packaging."
Magazines that do not end up in the residential waste stream are not included in the program.
