Job purpose

The opportunity of a lifetime; Canadian Geographic magazine is looking for a new Editor-in-Chief, a role where Canadian Geographic’s pillars of excellence in storytelling, photography and cartography across print and digital media platforms come to life. We are looking for an exemplary professional who can set business, journalistic and creative standards with the goal to maintain and strategically grow the Canadian Geographic brand.

Founded in 1930, and published by the Royal Canadian Geographical Society, Canadian Geographic is an iconic Canadian publication that has been making Canada better known to Canadians and to the world for more than 90 years.

Beyond its key role as publisher of Canadian Geographic, the Society also supports a robust national educational program of classroom educators – Canadian Geographic Education – as well as promotes broad geographic literacy through its expeditions, research grants, awards and other programs.

Duties and Responsibilities

- The Editor-in-chief sets editorial standards for the company, ensuring all editorial products meet these high standards of quality;
- The Editor-in-chief works with the managing editor and director, brand and creative, across all relevant departments of Canadian Geographic, helping oversee the day-to-day and long-term operation of the company’s editorial and, where applicable, business operations;
- The Editor-in-chief will help to lead the expansion of Canadian Geographic’s digital presence and to grow the audience.
- The Editor-in-chief is responsible for managing the department’s budgets;
- The Editor-in chief is responsible for managing editorial workflow schedules;
- The Editor-in-chief will be called upon from time to time to represent the company in media interviews;
- The Editor-in-chief will prepare and present reports on the department’s operations from time to time and as requested by the Publisher;
- The Editor-in-chief helps manage relationships within the editorial department and between the editorial department and other departments at Canadian Geographic, Canadian Geographic Education and the Royal Canadian Geographical Society;
- The Editor-in-chief leads by example in fostering a supportive, collaborative, respect driven culture;
- The Editor-in-chief collaborates with internal advertising, custom publishing, marketing and creative personnel
- The Editor-in-chief provides editorial leadership and advice to members of the editorial team and, when needed, Can Geo Education and the RCGS;
- Editorial leadership includes creatively identifying market opportunities and voids in content;
- The Editor-in-chief helps generate story ideas, plays a leading role in shaping the editorial direction of Canadian Geographic and, in collaboration with the managing editor, decides which stories to assign;
- The Editor-in-chief also serves more broadly as content lead for the RCGS, helping to develop and organize its Can Geo Talks series, the Fellows Dinner and other special Society events.

- Undergraduate Degree.
- A minimum of 8 (eight) years of experience managing an editorial staff for a consumer publication or custom publisher.
- The management of content development for a consumer oriented website.
- Knowledge and demonstrated interest in geography and travel.
- Excellent spelling, grammar, punctuation, proofreading and editing skills.
- Proven skills monitoring writers and editors in both print and online media platforms
- Experience working in an upbeat, fast paced, high energy, deadline driven, healthy work environment.
- Strong budgeting, planning and editorial execution skills.
- Experience producing quality work with expedited timelines as required.
- Self motivated personality, flexible, entrepreneurial, team based, capable of functioning with autonomy.
- Proficiency in managing people to build morale and enhance performance.
- Exceptional time management skills

Additional Considerations
Position is located in the beautiful headquarters for the Royal Canadian Geographic Society at 50 Sussex Drive.
The Royal Canadian Geographical Society requires all staff members to be fully vaccinated, unless they are unable to, under protected reasons under the Human Rights Code. Staff will be asked to sign our Vaccine Policy and submit a copy of their vaccination certificate.
Due to COVID-19 Guidelines, this is a hybrid role with in-office requirements on an ad-hoc needs basis. We are closely monitoring the evolving situation and the working environment will return to the office in the future.
