Award-winning Cottage Life magazine is looking for an enthusiastic, experienced designer with exceptional design and typographic skills. If you enjoy working in a highly collaborative, innovative environment, and have an interest in cottage culture, read on.

Reporting to the Art Director, the designer will be responsible for producing fresh, creative compositions on deadline and within the design guidelines of the magazine as well as managing schedules and budgets. He/she participates in all creative planning and implementation, as well as helping with conceptualization, layout, and design for all sections of the book. Working knowledge of Creative Suite is a must, as is a keen interest in emerging digital platforms.

Core Responsibilities

Generate art, photography, and illustration concepts that will create compelling, engaging stories while at the same time reinforcing the magazine’s mandate, philosophy, and profile
Brainstorm with the art and edit team to conceptualize vibrant editorial photography and illustration and highly packaged stories
Conduct photo research as required
Schedule and assign work to freelance illustrators and photographers
Art direct photo shoots and problem solve as needed
Work with the editors and art department to generate story ideas and develop integrated strategies and solutions for stories and packages
Oversee the production of editorial pages and proof digital images to ensure colour, retouching and editorial accuracy
Send and receive digital files for print and communicate with production
Self-manage daily workflow requirements, multi-task, and operate within tight deadlines
Work on occasional special projects

Key Qualifications & Experience

Degree in design from an accredited design college as well as a minimum of three to five years’ experience in the consumer magazine field
Extensive experience in editorial design with a focus on packaged stories
Some experience in art direction on location and in studio
Experience in food photography is an asset
Photo research experience
Exceptional communication, organizational and interpersonal skills
Confidence to work independently as well as part of a team
First-rate knowledge of Creative Suite 6
Portfolio which illustrates excellence and great attention to detail in page design, typography, editorial packaging, and production skills
Strong problem-solving and organizational skills
Illustration and retouching skills
Knowledge of interactive Adobe DPS and other rich media
Desire to excel in an innovative media environment
Keen interest in cottage culture and a knowledge of current trends in magazine design
