Digital Editor (3 month contract) - potential to extend

Location: 37 Front Street, Toronto

A robust, engaging digital presence is crucial for any brand. This includes the production of original written content, as well as video, podcasts, and interactive media.

What do we need from you?

Totem is hiring a Digital Editor to maintain and improve the quality and consistency of content across media types and platforms, with special attention given to driving increased traffic and brand visibility.

What will you be doing?

Maximize impact of digital content (40%)

• Leverage analytics tools to make good editorial decisions and engage audiences.
• Research audience behaviour data to generate and summarize reports. Understand and communicate the insights for other parts of the business.
• Work collaboratively with editors, designers and developers to craft effective headlines, visuals and interactive media.
• Develop and execute A/B content tests.
• Optimize content for search engines.
• Moderate community on digital platforms and social media.

Create Content (40%)

• Create compelling and original content for clients and Totem’s own digital marketing materials, including video, branded content and native advertising.
• Participate and contribute to editorial meetings.
• Manage the Totem website’s content, including press releases.
• Manage the digital content production process to ensure timeliness and quality.
• Engage audiences through various social media platforms including Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, YouTube, and new social media channels.

Manage print-to-web production (20%)

• Reformat existing magazine content – copy, photos, graphics, etc., and upload to CMS
• Help optimize content for search engine rankings by creating internal and external article links
• Oversee the quality assurance and proofreading process prior to publishing


What we’re looking for?

Education, Experience & Technical Skills

• A university degree or equivalent experience
• Experience creating and publishing content for digital platforms, including WordPress
• Basic/Intermediate HTML/CSS
• Knowledge of Photoshop, Indesign and general graphic software
• Understanding Google Analytics and other metrics, and using that data to build a bigger online audience.

Soft Skills and Competencies

• Great eye for editorial and design detail.
• Highly organized and efficient.
• Outstanding interpersonal and formal, written and verbal skills.
• A passion for online marketing and journalism. A large consumer of social media.
• Up-to-date on digital trends in the travel, automotive or food sectors.
• Strong understanding of SEO and accessibility standards and best practices.
• Comfort working under pressure with multiple deadlines and competing demands
